At Assemblyfor, we wanted to produce an infographic that highlights the many positive impacts that the integration of refugees into our societies can bring.

While it presents significant challenges, migration is hugely important to economic growth for Germany. Years of decreasing birth rates across much of Germany have led to fears for the future Germany workforce. Migration fueled by the arrival of refugees presents an opportunity and a realistic solution to this problem.

Studies by the International Monetary Fund and the German Institute for Employment Research show that if refugees are successfully helped to find good jobs, develop relevant employment skills, and start new business, it could have a long-term positive impact on Germany’s GDP of up to 36,3 Billion Euros by 2020. Conversely, poor labor market integration could lead to an increase in government debt of up to 23,1 Billion Euros by 2020.

Many businesses and civil society organizations recognize the importance of integrating refugees into the labor market and have developed programs that foster these efforts. Policymakers in Germany are called to support these initiatives that will best facilitate the integration of the especially young refugee population in to Germany’s workforce.

KIRON provides free higher education to refugees. JOBLINGE assists youth in finding an apprenticeship. Other programs, such as the business initiative WIR ZUSAMMEN, supports the labor market integration of refugees. Self-employment could be a particularly good opportunity for labor market integration.

We hope that this infographic supports the efforts of these programs and highlights how the successful integration of refugees can empower Germany’s future economy.
